The relationship between climate change and mental health: a systematic review of the association between eco-anxiety, psychological distress, and symptoms of major affective disorders
Cosh, S. M., Ryan, R., Fallander, K., et al.
This systematic review synthesized 35 studies (total N = 45,667 adults) examining the relationship between eco-anxiety and validated mental health outcomes. It found consistent small-to-large associations between eco-anxiety and psychological distress, depression, and general anxiety and stress symptoms, though results for PTSD symptoms and pathological worry were mixed. Associations were stronger when eco-anxiety was measured as ‘anxiety’ rather than as general ‘worry,’ suggesting eco-anxiety reflects a genuine psychological burden.
