Dear colleagues,
Guest writer, Lisa Bryne Mathiassen, Intern from The Institute of Human Geography

Despite the fact that LBGTQI + rights have seemed to progress with marriage equality, hate-crime legislations and anti-discriminatory protections, these apparent gains are rapidly regressing with homophobia, transphobia and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric on the rise. It is alarming to witness the hostile movements towards the LGBTQI + community and especially towards trans people, under Trump’s presidency and in right-wing movements around the world.

Within the first two weeks of his presidency, Donald Trump signed over 40 executive orders, targeting the community and particularly attacking trans people’s rights. In the aftermath of the 2024 election, The Trevor Project reported a staggering 700% surge in the use of their crisis services for LGBTQI+ youth. This shows the psychological cost of Trump’s presidency on this group in the U.S. Many young people in this community are afraid, anxious, and scare about Trump’s presidency.

These orders aim to erase the existence of transgender identities by recognising only two “biological” sex categories, male and female, thus denying transgender and non-binary people recognition of their preferred gender or X-marker on their documents. Additionally, many trans individuals are also facing denial of essential and life-saving medical care, as some states move to ban healthcare for trans youth.

Another order, “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling”, misleadingly asserts that children are being coerced into surgical and chemical mutilation without parental consent.

This rhetoric not only distorts reality but also fuels misinformation within the public discourse on transgender rights. Such misinformation is strategically used to support state and federal policies that restrict access to transition related healthcare, using harmful myths to justify these measures.

Yet, Davis, the leader of a non-profit for Bipoc trans individuals in New York, remarked; “Even in the face of policies meant to erase us, our resilience and community will endure”.

What is happening in the United States with the LGBTQ+ community does not only affect this country; on the contrary, it sends worrying signals to the world, especially in countries where this community already has limited or annulled rights. That is why we have compiled some information about the current situation for the LGBTQI+ community in the U.S. with a focus on mental health and care resources. We hope you find this useful and share it with your colleagues, family, and friends.

All our gender-based violence manuals can be downloaded for free from the MHHRI website

Three gender-based violence manuals have been developed to support helpers working with womenboys and men, and children who have experienced sexual violence.

These manuals are available in multiple languages, enabling survivors and helpers to access the content in their preferred language while maintaining consistent headlines and numbering. This multilingual approach facilitates teaching when participants and trainers speak different languages. Each manual includes a toolbox of grounding exercises that survivors can use on their own, to manage emotions or in collaboration with a helper. Additionally, helpers can use these exercises for their own self-care.
